Deckorators Venture Deck with Deckorators Cable Railing

Build a deck with Deckorators Venture decking, Venture or PVC fascia, Deckorators horizontal cable railing, Southern Yellow Pine lumber frame, and Diamond Pier footings. 

Quantities needed for each item may vary depend on your home's layout, yard grade, and personal preferences.

Framing

The bones of the deck: 2x10/12 material for beam, ledger, and joists, as well as footings and support posts.

Framing Connectors and Fasteners

Fasteners and galvanized connectors for attaching framing members to each other.

Flashing, tape, and SDWS screws for waterproofing and securing the ledger to the house wall.

Deck Boards

Floorboards for the main deck area, and non-grooved boards for borders and stair treads.

Decking Fasteners

Hidden fastener clips for grooved boards, screws with plugs for borders and treads, or color-matched face screws for straightforward installation.

Stair Framing and Hardware

Stringer material, stringer connectors and screws, subtreads, and joist tape for waterproofing the cut stringer faces.

Fascia Boards

12" fascia boards can be used to cover the vertical faces of the deck framing. When 8" riser boards are available, they can be used for each stair riser.

Nearly all composite collections have 8" and 12" wide profiles, most PVC collections will only have 12" wide profiles.

When closing off the stringers and 12" fascia is not wide enough, two 8" risers can be used side-by-side.

Fascia Fasteners

Screws are specifically designed according to the type of fascia being used: wide-head for WPC fascia, trim head for PVC fascia.

Pre-Drilled Railing Posts

  • With horizontal cable railing, posts come with different pre-drilled holes depending on how the cable runs through the post. Top-of-stair, bottom-of-stair, in the middle of a straight run, and the end of a run (with the fitting inside the post), turning a corner inside the post, etc.
  • Surface-mounted posts can be screwed to deck framing and blocking at evenly spaced intervals, and then have the panels secured to the sides of the posts.

Top Rail or Rail "Frame"

  • Since the railing infill is simply the sables, rail sections for horizontal cable usually include a top rail and sometimes a baluster brace.
  • Depending on the system, brackets are included to secure the rails to the sides of the posts, or for over-the-top styles, splices are used to join top rails together, and top rails are simply screwed to the posts.
  • Level or horizontal panels can be used on the deck surface, and stair panels can be used for angled sections running down stairs.
  • Cable kits with fittings are chosen to run a specific length, ideally not over 60 feet, and not turning more than two 90 degree corners.
